How dry days work in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu fixes eight dry days in its liquor licence rules: Thiruvalluvar Day, Republic Day, Vallalar Ninaivu Naal, Mahavir Jayanti, May Day, Independence Day, Milad-un-Nabi and Gandhi Jayanti.

Four have fixed dates (26 January, 1 May, 15 August, 2 October). The others move with the calendar; in 2026, Thiruvalluvar Day was 16 January, Mahavir Jayanti 31 March and Milad-un-Nabi 26 August. The District Collector announces each one beforehand.

The rule covers clubs and star hotels as well, so there is no carve-out for bars.

Elections add dry days anywhere. No liquor may be sold or served in a polling area for 48 hours ending when polling closes, and states usually add a counting-day closure. Exact dates are set close to each poll by the excise department or District Collector.
